Intel Processor Xeon
You can try to compare E5-2678 V3 against the i7-6950X.
They both mount o LGA2011-V3 sockets but:
- Xeon has larger L1, L2, L3 cache about 50% more;
- Xeon has lower clock, 2.5GHz Vs 3.0 GHz and corresponding slower turbo mode;
- Xeon TDP is 15% less, 120W Vs 140W;
- Xeon has more cores and threads;
- Xeon is 15% slower overall;
- Xeon is 25% slower on single thread;
- Xeon is server Vs desktop;
- Xeon is cheaper when bought used;
- Xeon may use cheaper (when bought used) registered memory;
- Xeon has typically a locked multiplier, not good for overclock.
Overall Xeon is built to manage slightly different energy and cooling requirements and pushes multitasking a little further. I would say built for reliability Vs sheer power.
This been said I built and upgraded 5 Xeon desktops, and I never found they would operate any different than a Core processor. As a matter of fact I use four out of five for gaming.
